Pharmacy Service with Passion in Kenya, Africa

Kristen N. Finley, Terren Kindsvatter

Abstract

In November of 2008, fourteen pharmacy students from Ohio Northern University and preceptors Kristen Finley, PharmD and Annette Enlow, PharmD, participated in the SHARE-Kenya program for a three and a half week mission trip between Thanksgiving and Christmas. They brought the practice of pharmacy to a very receptive and appreciative patient population. The pharmacy team had many roles to fulfill in this unique place. Diseases encountered were not typical of what we had seen in the United States. Our pharmacy team played a significant role in the care provided to the patients of Masara, Kenya. Not only did we dispense thousands of medications to patients, but we counseled every single patient who received treatment. Our medical mission team treated over 3,500 patients in this underserved area, where 70% of the population lacked access to healthcare. The need for healthcare continues to grow in Africa, and we feel blessed to have been able to contribute through the efforts of SHARE-Kenya.
