Statin drugs have become one of the most prescribed classes of medications in the world. Their initial use was indicated for treatment of hyperlipidemia. However, over the last 10-20 years, their use has been rapidly increasing due to evidence showing reduction in ASCVD events. However, there has been a lot of controversy regarding whether they are actually reducing the risk of ASCVD or if their causing more harm than good. Many healthcare professinals have claimed that Statins are being overprescribed as part of a "money-grab" for pharmaceutical companies. This critical review aims to shed light on both sides of the controversy.
